MBAD Painting Workshops embrace the notion of exploration and encourages a risk-taking attitude. Beginning and intermediate students work with water-based mediums exploring the visual challenges of color, scale and space. Interspersed throughout their studio experiences are references to historical and contemporary issues. Whether working with still life, figuration, representation or abstraction, these encounters with paint will help build a sense of confidence and accomplishment.

Description:

At SBAD, we believe young children have the advantage when it comes to art. They respond with absolute honesty and have no preconceptions about what things “should” look like. That’s why so many artists including Matisse, Miro, Klee and Picasso looked to children’s art for inspiration.

In the st•ART program, we embrace this innocence, encouraging children to try different materials, techniques and mediums to find their own way, helping to build confidence and independence. All while having fun!

Description:

This ongoing uninstructed workshop offers artists of all levels to practice drawing the human form with nude art models. Beginners are welcome. A moderator is available to answer questions and help with supplies. Each session involves short 1-minute gestural poses as well as longer 10 to 20 minute poses. Models are female unless otherwise noted.

Description:

Through demonstrations, critiques, and shooting exercises, we’ll learn learn how to manipulate aperture, shutter speed, white balance and sensitivity to create your desired effect. Topics of interest include depth of field, composition, focal point, and how to “see” light. Assignments will tackle a variety of photographic concerns including portraiture, shooting in available/low light, action photography, street photography, and more. Bring your own DSLR.

Description:

At the Manhattan Beach Art Department, we believe in the importance of learning the fundamentals of drawing, primarily the introduction of a wide variety of these graphic tools to acquaint students to the broadest range of possibilities for exploration and manipulation. Innovative projects in our drawing courses may include: keeping a sketchbook, learning various mark-making & line qualities, drawing from both memory and direct observation, figure drawing (including portraits), gesture and contour drawing, positive/negative spatial interaction, perspective, and landscape considerations.

In the end, whether you work more realistically or abstractly, we believe in the importance and significance of mark making and in the individual’s personal, creative vision.

Description:

At the Manhattan Beach Art Department, our sculpture program is devoted to creating works that expose students to a range of new materials and techniques, with the development of a unique, personal expression as the prime directive.

Materials include wire, wood, cloth, and recycled materials. As always, all creative work is balanced done within a historical context including analysis other sculptural works through slides, discussion and critique of geometric, scale, tactile and psychological considerations.
