stART, Age 5 & up

At SBAD, we believe young children have the advantage when it comes to art. They respond with absolute honesty and have no preconceptions about what things “should” look like. That’s why so many artists including Matisse, Miro, Klee and Picasso looked to children’s art for inspiration.

In the st•ART program, we embrace this innocence, encouraging children to try different materials, techniques and mediums to find their own way, helping to build confidence and independence. All while having fun!

Contemporary Painting

Some painters transform the sun into a yellow spot; others transform a yellow spot into the sun. ~ Pablo Picasso

Contemporary Painting Workshops at the South Bay Art Department embrace the notion of exploration and experimentation, encouraging a risk-taking attitude. We do not focus on the accuracy of the representation, but rather we strive to elicit a powerful expression.

All painting students work with water-based mediums — exploring the visual challenges of color, scale and space. And in an effort to break away from preconceptions, the tools and materials we use are often varied and experimental.

Interspersed throughout painting studio experiences are references to historical and contemporary issues. Whether working with still life or figuration, these encounters with paint will help build a sense of confidence and accomplishment.

Manga/Cartooning

All great comics have two things in common: a unique character and a memorable story. That’s why all of our cartooning classes start with character design and evolve into visual storytelling and rendering.

Classes topics include: building character from shapes, portraying personality through action line, conveying emotion, building a plot, as well as working with a wide variety of materials and techniques.

Art After Dark

Art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life. ~ Pablo Picasso

Be an artist for a night. No experience necessary.

Tonight, we’re not following directions or rules. We aren’t being judged as good or bad. And we’re certainly NOT painting by numbers. We’re going to escape all of the rigid results-oriented tasks of our daily lives by making spontaneous, personal art!

  • Contemporary Painting: This kind of painting isn’t about recreating what you see. It’s about painting what you feel! Working at your own easel, you can paint a portrait, a pet, a landscape, or any other subject matter of your choosing (just bring a photo). Or you can work like Pollock – on the floor, pouring, dribbling, scraping and stamping (you might even use a brush)! There are no formulas or “how-to’s”. And you don’t have to be an experienced artist either. If you like, we can project your image onto the canvas so you can get a sketch down. So all you need is a spirit of adventure and a willingness to let yourself go.

Art After Dark is a truly unique and inspiring art studio experience perfect for a girls night out, birthday, bachelorette party, bridal shower, baby shower, date night, corporate team-building, or fundraiser. And everyone goes home with a personal work of art.

$30 per person. Reservations are required.

  • Includes instruction, paint, and a 30×22 canvas.
